The ModulAir patch simply uses an Oscillator, a Hilbert Transform module (a kind of mathematical modification of the signal – it can also be used to assemble frequency shifters, etc) and a mixer. Each channel is then processed through a separate delay unit before going out to the mixer and the sound output module.

The outputs of the VCV Host are then processed through two parallel DICA33 filters with the filter cutoffs controlled by two random output channels from the SOY MODEL SOU random module. ModulAir is loaded into Host, with the CV and Gate outputs from the MusicWonk patch driving it along. This comes out of the MIDI-CV VCV module and then goes into VCV Host. In this patch, MusicWonk provides the basic MIDI signal. The only bit of payware in this patch is the VCV Host module, and that is pretty modestly priced at $30 USD. It should be pointed out that as well as ModulAir, both MusicWonk and VCV Rack (and the NYSTHI plugins) are all free. The range of the controls is wide, and fine control is possible with holding down CTRL when moving the knob.īelow is a screenshot of ModulAir in an environment with both MusicWonk and the VCV Rack synthesis environment, using a number of NYSTHI modules. For those new to modular synthesis, there is an excellent manual, available in both English and French.Įach control has its value displayed underneath the knob. You can also save and load any presets you make, of course. The synth comes with 54 presets which will explain the functioning of the synth quite adequately. Furthermore, when you hover your mouse over a patched input, the source module then changes color so you can see where the signal is coming from. The synth does not use patch cords, but clicking on each input or output slot brings up a menu of available patch options. I then went on and tried it as a VST plugin in the Host module in VCV Rack, and the results were similarly good. I first tried it as a VST plugin in Plogue Bidule, and it functioned just fine there. The synth works as a plugin in a host environment. And it supports double precision audio processing, so the sound is smooth. The synth supports MIDI Learn, with all the parameters controllable by external MIDI controllers.

The microtuning seems to work flawlessly, based on my limited testing. The polyphony is settable up to 64 voices (depending on your CPU, of course), and it can be micro-tuned using Scala SCL and KBM, or Scala TUN files. Although this might seem like a limitation at first, the fact that the synth can operate in polyphonic mode means that for most applications, eighteen modules is actually quite sufficient. The synthesizer has a large component of modules and is limited to eighteen modules in any one patch. It is available for both PC (VST) and Mac (VST and AU) in both 32 and 64-bit formats.

ModulAir is a free polyphonic modular synthesizercreated by Bjorn Arlt at Full Bucket Music (it’s donationware, to be more accurate).
